More of Me to Love

Knowing my ego, you probably think the title means that there is another of my columns now available at the Boston Herald. Well, yes. But it also means that's the subject of my column. After the holidays, there's more of me to love.

You're a smart bunch, so you've probably figured out what that means. But if you haven't - or even if you have - why not go to the Boston Herald and read all about it? After all, if you love me (and why wouldn't you?) you'll probably at least like my column.

If you go there, my big fat self says "Thank You!"

Soon, with more better stuff.

I gained 4 pounds, and fruitcake shares some of the blame. I contend that Fruitcake haters have never actually tried it. It somehow became a joke about 30 years ago, before then it was a staple enjoyed by all, once it became a joke people don't even try it.

It became a joke because it lasts forever and some one claimed the same cake was re-gifted every year for years. Never re-gifted in my house. If it is dry it is not so good, but a moist fruitcake...moistened with rum...DELICIOUS!!!

We all gain a bit, but i think some people exaggerate how much they gained. Why, i'm not sure. Maybe to garner sympathy?

Fruitcakes can be delicious, as can plum pudding and figgy pudding. It's all in how it's made.

Fruitcake....something I can walk away from (unlike Do Si Dos, which I love...and now look what you've done, you bad boy). Fruitcake does get a bad rap, although I think there are more lovers than haters!
I worked for a pediatric dentist in San Antonio...rather an odd guy, very sweet. Kids loved him. Staff loved him too, but the man couldn't be on time if his life depended on it...on those days where we're waiting for him to STOP TALKING to a parent at 5:30 when we are all ready to go home, sometimes that love was sorely tested. One of his quirky habits was to send fruitcake to all the dentists that referred patients to us, along with other acquaintances. I always thought it was an strange choice given the reputation of fruitcake ~ given as a gift. I was the recipient of one every Christmas. I didn't really like them, but Romeo did. So, in case you are wondering where he ordered these fruity delights, here is the web site: https://www.collinstreet.com/online_bakery_gift/deluxe_fruitcake?t_s_bg_kw_fruitcake.
There, now we're even. :-)

Joe - You, sir, have the correct attitude.

Mimi - Indeed. A bad fruitcake is an abomination, but it shouldn't give a bad name to the good ones.

Crazy - Collins Street makes magnificent fruitcakes! It was one of the ones we ordered in our "race".

Mimi: A big yes to plum pudding! Used to have it every CHristmas with hard (rum) sauce. DOn't know why I don't have it now...I'm going to look for it.

Not a big fan of the fruitcake (can we still be friends?), but I gain ten pounds just breathing within ten feet of a pumpkin pie (we won't even talk about stuffing). . .

And, just between you and me, I can kill a box of Thin Mints in ten minutes. Seriously; those things are the crack of cookie-dom. . .

Ray's doctor told him that a gain of a few pounds over a vacation or holiday is normal .. so be kinder to yourself and know when there's more of you to love its a good thing

I love fruit cake, especially when I make it myself. If you and your lovely WIFE ever come to Toronto, I'll bake you one.
